History of the EGPD: from 2010 to 2019

1st EGPD in Potsdam, Germany (2010)

The first European Geothermal PhD-day (EGPD2010) was held at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ - German Research Centre for Geosciences - on February 12th, 2010, as a result of an initiative of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) joint program in geothermal energy.

2nd EGPD in Reykjavik, Iceland (2011)

The second EGPD was held in Reykjavik from 1. to 2. March 2011. Around 60 PhD candidates from 13 countries participated in the conference with subsequent field trip. More information about the event can be found under this link.

3rd EGPD in Pisa, Italy (2012)

Around 70 students joined the 3rd EGPD Pisa from 29th to 30th of March 2012 and presented their research. The conference included a field trip to the geothermal areas of Larderello, where for the first time in 1904, a pioneering experiment was done that made production of energy from geothermal sources possible.

4th EGPD in Szeged, Hungary (2013)

The 4th EGPD took place in Szeged in Southern Hungary from 5th to 7th of May 2013. The host was the University of Szeged. The conference lasted for three days and included a field trip to geothermal heat pump system of local conference centre, a geothermal drilling site and cascade system of the local geothermal spa resort Mórahalom. The geological conditions beneath Southern Hungary makes the area a great location for geothermal projects.

5th EGPD in Darmstadt, Germany (2014)

The 5th EGPD took place in Darmstadt from 31st to 2nd of April 2014. The event was hosted by the Darmstadt University of Technology, Institute of Applied Geosciences, Chair of Geothermal Science and Technologyin collaboration with the Young Geothermal Chapter (Junge Geothermie) of the German Geothermal Association.

6th EGPD in Delft, The Netherlands (2015)

The 6th EGPD took place at Delft University of Technology. The event took place from February 25th to February 27th, 2015. Around 40 students from various geothermal disciplines joined the conference. A field trip to a regional green house was organized where heat from geothermal wells is used to sustainably grow vegetables.

7th EGPD in Bari, Italy (2016)

The 7th EGPD was held at the University of Bari, Italy from 24th to 26th of Februry. Among others, the invited key note speakers included Prof. Bruno Della Vedova (University of Trieste, Italy) and Fausto Batini (Chief Executive officer at Magma Energy Italia). A field trip to the vocanic highly active Campi Flegrei (Burning Fields) near Napoli was organized.

8th EGPD in Bochum, Germany (2017)

The 8th EGPD was organized by the Ruhr-University Bochum together with the GeothermieZentrum (GZB) Bochum. Among others, a key note was presented by Inga Moeck, Section Leader Geothermics at LIAG, with the title "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: The Role of Faults in Geothermal Systems". The field trip included three amazing stops, including a visit of the German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum), the mine water project "Robert Müser" and a geological site in a quarry.

9th EGPD in Zurich, Switzerland (2018)

The 9th EGPD was organized by PhD students of the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids (GEG) Group at ETH Zurich from the 14th to 16th of March. An excursion to the geothermal site Grünwald near Munich, Germany was organized.
